Samenvatting:
As part of ECN's in-house R and D programme on high-temperature fuelcells (MCFC and SOFC), system integration of solid oxide fuel cells with small advanced gas turbines for the Dutch combined heat and power market have been assessed, in order to determine whether this could enhance the competitiveness of fuel cell systems. Thermodynamic computations by means of the advanced flow sheeting program ASPEN PLUS"T"M indicate that the integrated fuel cell advanced gas turbine CHP system can achieve electrical efficiencies up to 70% (LHV) and total efficiencies up to 84% (LHV). The higher electrical efficiency of the hybrid system, compared with SOFC systems alone, allows an increase in the investment costs of about 40%, which is more than the additional investment required for the advanced gas turbine. Thus, the integration of solid oxide fuel cells with small advanced gas turbines will enhance the competitiveness of SOFC systems in the CHP market. 2 figs., 2 tabs., 3 refs.
