Samenvatting:
The company Truckbouw B.V., located in Aalten, The Netherlands has built a prototype of a refrigerator that is mounted upon a trap-carrier. The energy for the cooler is supplied by solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, which are mounted on a frame above the cooler. ECN Renewable Energy International (ECN/REI) is active in Africa in the field of implementation of PV systems. In co-operation with industries ECN/REI tries to develop an affordable PV refrigerator. By applying PV, no electricity grid is necessary to keep the temperature within the refrigerator low enough for the whole day in sub-tropical climates. The trap-carrier/refrigerator is a "Bosch GTL 1502" freezer of 135 litres that has been converted to a cooler. The refrigerator has been mounted upon a trap-carrier "Apollo". In order to prove that this trap-carrier/refrigerator works properly and reliable under the local circumstances and climate in Africa, it has been tested by ECN. Successively the following tests have been carried out: Phase I: 1. Performance measurement of the PV refrigerator; 2. Shock test of the refrigerator while mounted on the trap-carrier. Phase II: 1. Endurance test of the PV refrigerator under extreme climates; 2. Performance measurement of the PV refrigerator after the endurance test. The measured energy consumption of the refrigerator, which has been converted to a cooler, is equal to 295 Wh per day. The ambient temperature was equal to 32 degrees Celsius and the internal temperature was degrees Celsius. The refrigerator being mounted on the trap-carrier passed the shock test of 90 minutes. During the shock test and also after this test the refrigerator operated properly. Both during the test and afterwards no damage was observed. During the endurance test at an ambient temperature of 40.5 degrees Celsius and a high relative humidity (phase II, test 1), the refrigerator functioned properly. The measured daily energy consumption was about 50 % higher than in the earlier test at 32 degrees Celsius. Also in the final performance measurement the refrigerator proved to function properly and no significant degradation in the performance was observed.
