Samenvatting:
Several institutes and companies in the Netherlands participated in averification study for the applicability of available test methods for the environmental evaluation of stabilized materials. A wide range of materials (contaminated dredge spoil, MSWI fly ash, zinc ash, sewage sludge, paper waste, flue gas cleaning waste and contaminated soil of a foundry ) were tested with existing and recently developed methods after immobilisation with different technologies provided by vendors. For the verification study the following tests were applied or parameters assessed: total composition, availability for leaching according to the Dutch Standard NEN 7341, diffusion test according to NEN 7345, method for salt content (new), mobilized organic matter (new), and a redox test. The diffusion test is a proper method to assess stabilized materials for inorganic and, with minor modifications, organic contaminants. The availability test is applicable to the variety of stabilized materials with the exception of bituminous materials. The determination of soluble salt content can best be assessed through the method based on heating to dryness and weighing due to its simplicity and applicability. The redox test indicates when reducing properties need to be considered. The test for mobilized organic matter appears to be sufficiently discriminating and indicates when possible complexation with dissolved organic matter may be prominent. The extraction with 0.1 N NaOH, which is used as the basis for this test, may be used as starting point for a method to assess the availability of organic contaminants for leaching. For all three additional tests an intercomparison study is recommended. 10 figs., 10 tabs., 2 appendices, 24 refs.
