Hybsi® membrane competes for innovation award
ECN’s Hybsi® membrane has been nominated for the Accenture Innovation Award and selected as one of the best 25 candidates in the field of Energy&Chemicals. Hybsi is a membrane technology that can be used by the (petro-chemical) industry to separate liquids and gases. This is done, for example, in the production of biofuels or in the purification of solvents such as acetic acid or acetone.
The artist’s impression shows the hybrid character of the Hybsi® membrane, which consists of organic (yellow boxes) and of inorganic (red boxes) components. In diameter, the holes are smaller than a nanometre. They do let water molecules pass (red-white) but not butanol molecules (black-white-red).
What is revolutionary about the Hybsi® technology is that it uses substantially less energy than common separation technologies, while the quality of the end product is higher. Moreover, the membrane remains stable under acidic and aggressive circumstances and at high temperatures. Users of the membrane can thus save costs and deliver an end product with a higher purity. Thanks to the Hybsi® technology, the entire chemical industry can make an important step towards becoming more sustainable.
The Accenture Awards are intended for innovative products or services that have been launched in the Netherlands within the last three years. Consultancy firm Accenture wishes to make remarkable performances visible. There will be jury awards as well as a public award. The winners will be announced on 8 November 2013.
