Research contract with POSCO Energy

With the assistance of ECN, the Korean company POSCO Energy is building a lab-scale MILENA gasification installation. The aim is to find out if biomass of Korean origin can be converted into green energy. To this end, POSCO and ECN have closed a research agreement for three years, which builds upon a previous, more general, collaboration agreement closed in 2011.

Energy from waste
The ECN patented, globally unique MILENA technology enables high-efficiency conversion of biomass into gas, from which SNG (Substitute Natural Gas), electricity or biodiesel can be extracted. With the MILENA technology, POSCO Energy aims to generate heat, energy and SNG from biomass or waste.

POSCO Energy
POSCO Energy entered into business as Korea’s first private energy company and has meanwhile developed into one of the global front runners in the field of sustainable energy. POSCOs strategy is aimed at decreasing energy use and developing innovative technologies to reduce CO2 emissions. MILENA is a highly suitable technology for this endeavour.
