ECN enters into agreement with Andritz Oy
Together with the Finnish company Andritz Oy, subsidiary of the international Andritz Group, ECN will continue to develop its torrefaction technology and bring it to the market. Andritz Oy is one of the global market leaders when it comes to installations, systems and services for the pulp and paper industry. The Andritz Group is global market leader in the supply of installations for wood pellet production.
Andritz obtained the exclusive right to use the patents and knowledge of ECN in torrefaction technology, which is a method that converts crude biomass into high quality solid biofuel at a temperature of 200 to 320°C. ECN will also offer Andritz technical support, starting with setting up a joint demo plant for drying, torrefying and pelletising wood chips. Andritz will take care of the marketing of the technology at a later stage. ECN director Paul Korting is extremely satisfied with the agreement: ‘We played a pioneering role in the development of the torrefaction technology. The collaboration with Andritz enables both parties to make a technical and commercial success of it.’
