On Wednesday 9 November at precisely 21:48 PM, the High Flux Reactor in Petten had been in operation for exactly half a century. It was at that exact time fifty years ago that the first nuclear fission was conducted in the brand new reactor, which was the first one in the Netherlands. NRG is a daughter company of ECN.

On 22 November, NRG and JRC-IET organised a symposium in honour of 50 years High Flux Reactor and the establishment of the European Research Institute in Petten.  On this day, Her Majesty Queen Beatrix came to Petten to attend the celebration. The queen, accompanied by Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, the Euro commissioner for Research and Innovation, and by Maxime Verhagen, the Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation, also visited the High Flux Reactor and a research laboratory of the European Commission in Petten.
