ECN presents Microstructure and mechanical features at the Welding Symposium in Antwerp

Wednesday November 13, 2013 11:36

During the NIL-BIL Welding Symposium of 26 and 27 November in Antwerp, ECN’s Eric Schuring, Materials and International Welding Engineer (IWE), will give a presentation in collaboration with Nathalia Luzignova of NRG. The presentation will address microstructure and mechanical features of Friction Stir Welded (FSW) joints in 9% Cr steel.  The results are linked to the functional requirements for nuclear applications.

To develop new joining techniques for new nuclear reactors, FSW tests have been conducted at TWI (The Welding Institute, England) in collaboration with NRG (the Nuclear Research and Consultancy  Group). During these tests an especially developed tool was used to realise joints in P91 sheets. Some of the joints have been tested mechanically and the microstructure and hardness have been determined. Moreover, the effects of PWHT (Post Weld Heat Treatment)  on the mechanical features and microstructure have been examined.

Welding symposium
The BIL/NIL Welding symposium is a two-day symposium you don’t want to miss, offering thematic sessions addressing damages, advanced non-destructive research techniques, disparate materials and combinations of materials that are difficult to weld, and standards/experiences from practise.
