Energy efficient motor systems in Indonesia

In Indonesia, ECN is working with the Directorate of Energy Conservation (EBTKE), in the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), to develop a nationally appropriate mitigation action (NAMA) related to energy efficient electric motor systems. NAMAs are actions that the Government of Indonesia will take, potentially with international support, to meet its climate targets. A NAMA for electric motor systems can reduce energy demand from the industrial and commercial sectors and thereby reduce subsidies, as well as improve the revenues of Indonesian companies. 

More than 60% of electricity demand in Indonesia’s industrial and commercial sectors comes from electric motors. Many of these are older or lower efficiency designs, often used at fixed speeds that waste power. Typically less than 5% of a motor's lifetime expense comes from the cost of purchasing the equipment, the remaining 95% is dominated by the cost of power. More efficient motors and variable speed drives have the potential to deliver large energy savings and, therefore, financial benefits for the companies that adopt them.

Sistem Motor Listrik dengan Energi yang Efisien di Indonesia

ECN bekerjasama dengan Direktorat Jenderal Energi Baru dan Terbarukan (EBTKE), bagian dari Kementerian ESDM Indonesia, sedang membangun sebuah proposal NAMA (Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action) yang berhubungan dengan sistem motor litrik dengan energi yang efisien. Kegiatan kegiatan NAMA adalah aksi yang akan diambil oleh pemerintah Indonesia untuk memenuhi target pengurangan emisinya, yang potensial mendapat dukungan internasional. Sebuah NAMA untuk sistem motor litrik dengan energi yang efisien dapat mengurangi permintaan energi listrik dari sektor industri dan sektor komersial, sehingga akan mengurangi biaya subsidi dan juga meningkatkan keuntungan perusahaan-perusahaan yang ada di Indonesia.

Lebih dari 60% kebutuhan energi listrik dari sektor Industri dan sektor Komersial di Indonesia digunakan oleh motor listrik. Banyak dari sitem motor listrik di Indonesia sudah tergolong tua dan efisien perencanaannya yang rendah, dan sistem ini sering digunakan dengan kecepatan yang konstan, berakibat pada membuang-buang energi. Pada umumnya hanya 5% dari biaya selama penggunaan motor (life-time expenses) untuk pembelian peralatan, sementara 95% didominasi oleh biaya operasional (energi untuk menjalankan motor listrik). Motor listrik yang lebih efisien dan aplikasi VSD (Variable Speed Drives) akan menhasilkan penghematan energi yang besar, tentunya merupakan keuntungan bagi industri yang mengaplikasikannya.

End of lifetime replacement; most efficient IE-class that falls within the accepted maximum pay-back time. The IE-class electric motor with the highest efficiency will be chosen (in order IE4, IE3, IE2, IE1), that complies to the maximum entered pay-back time in years.

Discussion workshop December 2015:

May 2016: this webinar introduces listeners to the characteristics of energy efficient electric motor systems, their design and the savings that are possible from improved systems. In the second part, it summarizes some of the above findings and explains how we think Indonesia could harvest the calculated savings potential compared to the business as usual scenario; building upon existing policies and by introducing some new approaches as Voluntary Agreements.

June 2016: by handing over our NAMA proposal to ESDM, we have closed this project. The 40 pages of this confidential document explains how we think the Indonesia government could implement a policy programme focusing on energy efficient electric motors and their driven systems; including the needed governmental budget. It’s the driven systems where the larger savings are, which would needs more then only introducing the MEPS. Setting up a Voluntarily Agreement programme with (industrial and commercial) companies, using the knowledge and experiences of associations, is an important part of the proposed policy programme, just as setting up a supporting mechanism that includes certain forms of Financial Incentives. This is an ideal project to replicate for another country; saving potentials for electric motor driven systems are large around this world.
