Corporate Social Responsibility - ECN's policy

CSR is at the heart of our organisation. Contributing to a sustainable future forms the core of our mission. We are proud of this and would like to promote the importance of our work in the coming years. We would like to enter into dialogue with our stakeholders and communicate the choices that we make within our company. By measuring our performance and reporting on it annually, we will be in a better position in the near future to monitor our progress more effectively and compare this progress with our objectives.

Our aim is to achieve a balance between the three Ps: People, Planet and Profit: a combination of striving to achieve good economic results with added value for society, the environment and our employees.

More transparency at ECN

In 2011, ECN started orienting the organisation towards more transparency. A group of committed staff members started developing a clear CSR vision and policy for ECN.

Priorities set by ECN

In 2012, ECN set priorities within the three dimensions of People, Planet and Profit. We structured these according to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines. In 2012, we started by selecting 12 performance indicators within the areas of expertise where our influence has the most impact.

For 2013, we formulated objectives and action standards for all the indicators. From 2014 onwards, we would like to also report on our progress.

Economic performance by ECN

We are working to maintain our leading position in our market. Long-term profitability is a prerequisite for achieving our business objectives. A sound financial basis enables us to meet our CSR and other corporate responsibilities. For more information in this context, we refer you to our annual figures. ECN receives direct and substantial subsidies from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment; it utilises these subsidies to maintain a sound knowledge base.

Environmental performance by ECN

Every day, ECN works on a sustainable future for our energy management. With and for the market, we develop solutions that result, for instance, in CO2 reduction. In addition to this, we use targeted measures to reduce our own energy usage, to produce sustainable energy ourselves and to reduce the volume of waste that we ourselves produce. In the future, we will report on how deploying our innovations leads to better environmental performance for our customers and we will develop a measurement method for this in 2013. 

ECN and NRG’s joint long-term objective is to achieve 40% CO2 reduction in 2020 compared to 1995, to be realised through a combination of savings and using sustainable energy. The structure of the chart is explained in the text box shown below.

Social performance by ECN

Our members of staff are our organisation’s success factor. Their knowledge and conduct are decisive for our operating results. We want them to stay motivated and healthy and we want to ensure that they can work safely. We strive for and invest in a diverse and highly qualified team. ECN has a works council that is involved in this.

Product responsibility by ECN

The innovative solutions that ECN provides can only be created in close consultation with our partners and customers. We are proud of the results that we accomplish for and with customers. We focus our efforts on customer care and regularly assess customer satisfaction.
