Junior Researcher International Energy and Climate Policy

The Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) offers independent research and advice to governments and companies with respect to energy technology and policy. ECN Policy Studies is one of five units of ECN and employs a multidisciplinary team of seventy specialists who work nationally and internationally to provide advice and analysis in the field of energy and climate policy, using a broad range of up-to-date concepts, models and databases. ECN Policy Studies has offices in Amsterdam and Petten.

Working area

The global climate and energy problem is in the centre of the attention of many national and international policymakers. To help address their questions, ECN Policy Studies generates and disseminates high-quality knowledge and experience in the field of climate and energy policy for key decision-makers and interested parties worldwide. The focus of work is on innovative policy concepts such as Low-Carbon Development Strategies (LCDS), National Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) and related technology transfer. Clients for studies are ministries (in developed and developing countries), agencies and international organisations such as CDKN, GIZ, UNFCCC, UNEP, the European Commission, and the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Activities of the group

The Global Sustainability group is a multidisciplinary team of experts with technological and economic backgrounds. The researchers work in project teams which often combine qualitative analysis with quantitative tools to achieve high-quality and policy-relevant outputs. Examples of recent projects on the topic of international energy and climate policy are:
Support to several governments and international organisations on developing and implementing national appropriate mitigation actions
Assessment of low-carbon development options for various developing country governments.
Conceptual development and identification of best practices on Green Growth

Our work often consists of quantitative analysis of global renewable energy and climate policy. We carry out research projects in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of researchers. Besides own contributions to the projects, ECN employees are also encouraged to grow towards project management and dissemination of project results through presentations and publications.

Requested profile

We are looking for an academic with a relevant background (natural sciences, engineering or economics with specialisation in energy and/or environment). As our activities also require process management and advisory work directly for policy makers in developing countries, related skills are at least equally important as disciplinary knowledge. Key competencies are:
A critical and analytical mind set with a sense for numbers (e.g. the ability to rapidly check whether data make practical sense)
Curiosity, cultural sensitivity and a taste for travelling in less developed countries
Excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to play the role of an 'honest broker' of policy alternatives.
A sense for project management.
Furthermore, we are looking for a good team player with a result-oriented working attitude.
If you are not a Dutch citizen you are also invited to apply for the job. must be willing to learn the Dutch language.

Information and application

We offer you a position in a highly motivated team in Amsterdam. Formal labour conditions are comparable to those at Dutch universities.

You can submit your application before 31 May and only through the below link.
