Wind turbine control & signal processing

The control of the wind turbine is at the heart of efforts to reduce the cost of energy. The controller sets the balance between energy production, fatigue and extreme loads and the control effort. The control is based on sensor signals. If one of the sensors fails, or if the turbine is not behaving as designed, it becomes more difficult to keep running and keep the loads limited.

A vacancy has become available for a student to perform his work experience at ECN. The core of the work is to examine different ways of using sensor information to predict other sensor signals and/or wind turbine states. Additionally, algorithms will be developed for deciding which sensor is likely to be faulty.
