European Projects

UpWind is a European project funded under the EU's Sixth Framework Progamme (FP6). The project looks towards the wind power of tomorrow, more precisely towards the design of very large wind turbines (8-10MW), both onshore and offshore.

The aim of the European project MEXICO was the creation of a well documented database of aerodynamic measurements, which are taken under controlled and hence known conditions, and which are used to validate or improve calculational methods.

The objective of the European project SIROCCO is to obtain a noise reduction of 3-6 dB on full-scale wind turbines, without a reduction in power performance.

In the European project WISE the application of the SODAR technique for wind energy applications was investigated.

IEA Annexes

Here two IEA R&D wind projects are described:
1. IEA ANNEX-XIV 'Field Rotor Aerodynamics' and its successor
2. IEA ANNEX-XVIII 'Enhanced Field Rotor Aerodynamics Database (EFRAD)'.
In these projects a co-operation has been established between several institutes working on the field of detailed aerodynamic measurements on full scale wind turbines.

IEA Annex XVII Database on Wind Characteristics has been operated as a project of the International Energy Agency, and constitutes a valuable tool for a consistent and rational calibration of essential wind characteristics for wind turbine design.
