Markets, infrastructure and energy security - Security of supply

Introduction

ECN has conducted a lot of research in the field of energy security of supply (SoS) in the recent years. This page provides an overview of that research, its application and clients.

Increasing awareness of the EU’s growing energy import dependency has put the issue of energy supply security high on the policy agenda again. The other two main goals of energy policy are facilitating properly functioning energy markets and minimising the environmental impact of energy use. These latter two goals both have an EU framework for defining and assessing policy instruments. Such a framework is largely absent for energy supply security, which, over time, has remained a national policy of the Member States. Some partial frameworks do exist, but only on an energy sector basis, such as an oil supply emergency framework and to a lesser extent for natural gas. ECN has recently developed a more integrated framework, in addition to these partial approaches.
