Johannesburg Energy & Poverty Platform

The Johannesburg Energy & Poverty Platform (JEPP) is a platform for all parties involved in the provision of energy services to poor people in the developing world. JEPP aims at bringing together the key actors, discussing the role of energy in poverty alleviation and exchanging information and experiences on issues related to energy and poverty. JEPP also facilitates the initiation of commercially viable business operations which contribute to improving modern energy services for the 2 billion people in the world without affordable, clean and safe cooking energy and the 1.6 billion people without electricity.

JEPP is initiated by the Dutch government to facilitate the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals. At the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg in 2002, it was concluded that access to reliable and affordable modern energy services is a prerequisite for achieving the MDGs. JEPP builds on this conclusion and aims to accelerate the provision of acceptable energy services to urban, peri-urban and rural poor communities in order to improve the living conditions of these people and to reduce poverty.
