LIMITS

Low climate IMpact scenarios and the Implications of required Tight emission control Strategies – LIMITS

Now and in the foreseeable future, action on climate mitigation and adaptation doesn’t seem to be sufficient to manage greenhouse gases and their impact at the scale required to achieve stringent objectives such as those compatible with the 2°C target. This project aims at carrying out a rigorous assessment of what a stringent climate policy entails, and what is needed to overcome major impediments. This information will allow policymakers to better assess the costs and benefits of aggressive climate targets, and on how to make them implementable.

Sustainable Hydrogen

The feasibility of hydrogen economy

The feasibility of the hydrogen economy as a function of developments in global energy markets and climate change policies

The hydrogen economy has become an accepted term for an energy system innovation that strongly depends on hydrogen as key energy carrier. Many system studies of the hydrogen economy, however, deal almost exclusively with the technological, rather than economic features of such a system. The objective of this project is to evaluate the techno-economic performance of presently proposed hydrogen technology chains, including the stages of production, infrastructure and end-use, in a range of future worlds.

Roadmap 2050

A practical guide to a prosperous, low-carbon Europe

In this project it is studied how greenhouse gas emissions in Europe in 2050 can be reduced by 80% compared to 1990. The ECN conbribution focused on policies required to achieve this goal. The project was carried out in a consortium and was commissioned by the European Climate Foundation.

PLANETS

Probabilistic Long-Term Assessment of New Energy technologies Scenarios

In the context of the PLANETS project scenarios were devised for the evolution of low-carbon energy technologies until 2050 and beyond with both a European and global perspective. PLANETS was an FP7 project in which 8 partners from across the EU, co-coordinated by FEEM and ECN, studied energy technology and climate mitigation scenarios for Europe and the world. After 30 months it was finalised in June 2010 with a policy workshop in Brussels.

European Energy Future

An essay in English in which four contrasting scenarios outline the future for energy in Europe.

Energy Vision

A vision by ECN and the Nuclear Research consultancy Group on a sustainable energy economy in Europe for the year 2050.

Energy policy is facing major challenges. Industrial countries are increasingly dependent on imports of oil and gas, and global warming is becoming more of a reality. In order to address these challenges, a sustainable energy system must be developed. This document presents an outline of a sustainable energy situation for Europe in the year 2050. The research institutes ECN and NRG hope that this vision will guide energy research and inspire both businesses and governments.
