The Nature of Future Electricity Supply in the Netherlands

On 11 November 2004 the Policy Studies department of the Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN, Amsterdam) organised a workshop on 'Clean Coal Power Technologies and Investment Risks - the nature of future electricity supply in the Netherlands'. Its main purpose was to assess the global future of clean coal technologies in relation to the changing environment of investment risks encountered in the power sector. Six speakers (Maroeska Boots, Cyriel de Jong, Kees van der Klein, Martin Scheepers, Harry Schreurs and Bob van der Zwaan) provided the background for a discussion (led by Daan Jansen, Marco Kanaar and Jaap Kiel) between 30 specialists from industry, utilities, government and academics, on the challenges dominating this subject matter.

The workshop assessed the global viability of, and renewed current interest in, pursuing the use of coal for electricity generation, and determined some of the principal tendencies in clean coal technology development in the long term. The main investment risks, as currently met in altering electricity markets, were analysed, and it was investigated how prevailing investment obstacles can be overcome in the short to medium term. These two subjects were merged in a synthesis on the nature of future electricity supply in the Netherlands, and the roles of clean coal technologies and investment risks herein.
