The objective of the group is to carry out research and consultancy on the strategies to support the implementation of renewable energy and to advise on the implementation of specific policy instruments for renewable energy. The group focuses on policy for renewable electricity as well as on renewable heat and biofuels. Most work is on a national or a European scale. Incidentally, the group is involved in a study with a global scale. In the Netherlands and Europe the group has obtained a solid position in research and policy advice. The group focuses particularly on applications of biomass, off-shore wind and solar PV, because most of the current issues in renewable energy lie in that area and the group is well-equipped to provide new insights on these subjects.
The Renewable Energy Directive of the EU sets ambitious targets for 2020, for which a portfolio of renewable energy technologies will be required. The group is well positioned to answer research questions articulated by various Ministries related to deployment paths, costs, benefits, spatial impacts on other sea functions and grid integration. A number of advanced quantitative in-house models are available for our research activities. The group has an in-depth knowledge of technology, economics and policies and is able to add a multi-disciplinary character to our research activities. We often collaborate with the other ECN program units, as well as with external partners (companies, universities, research institutes, government agencies).
