The group focuses on interactions of all sectors in energy systems and on practical and strategic policy questions that encompass all solution areas. In the Netherlands and Europe we have obtained a solid position in research and policy advice. We also study innovation policy, and the market introduction and integration of renewable energy. The group focuses particularly on applications of biomass, off-shore wind and solar PV, because most of the current issues in renewable energy lie in that area and we are well-equipped to provide new insights on these subjects.
Core products are scenarios and projections of energy use, energy efficiency and emissions monitoring, and integrated studies on energy and emission policies. Most work is on a national or a European scale. We work extensively for the Dutch government, and we are experienced in analysing European energy and climate policies. The group provides extensive data and information services.
The group aims to determine the effects of energy policy in a most realistic and up-to-date manner: what happens to energy use and emissions if policy remains unchanged? What can be expected of a policy instrument: what kind of energy saving, environmental effect, cost, economic effects and behavioural effects? How do various instruments affect each other: synergy or an adverse effect? How does current energy policy work and how can it be improved? What are realistic policy objectives and how do you determine whether they are achieved?
A number of advanced quantitative in-house models are available for our research activities. The group has an in-depth knowledge of technology, economics and policies and is able to add a multi-disciplinary character to our research activities. We often collaborate with the other ECN program units, as well as with external partners (companies, universities, research institutes, government agencies).
