Material characterization is very important for the evaluation of new developed materials. The large material laboratory can investigate and characterize the composition, micro structure and building up of materials and coatings.

With the available microscopic methods, light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, details until 5 nm are made visible on a routine basis. The analysing system connected with the SEM rapidly determines the composition of the investigated material.

Besides microscopic and physic characterization, materials can be determined by their mechanical properties. ECN can measure pull, press and bending strengths with forces up to 100 kN, hardness (macro and micro Vickers, Knoop, Brinell) up to 30 Kg and Rockwell hardness up to 150 Kg.
