The focus area Environmental Risk Assessment focuses on the environmental risks associated with the (re)use of contaminated materials, in particular the potential “leaching” of contaminants. Leaching is defined as the release of contaminants as a result of contact with (rain)water, in which contaminants may dissolve. The assessment of the potential leaching of contaminants is of relevance for e.g., waste materials that are to be re-used as a construction product, or for the development of sustainable landfilling concepts for waste materials that cannot be reused.
