General information.Almost every project involving biomass or waste starts with the composition and the variation in the composition of the materials. Because the information is scattered throughout literature and often expressed in different units, ECN decided in 1997 to design a database for internal use. This original database contained apart from data from literature and data from the database of the TU Wien, also analysis results of many fuels and materials determined at ECN. With financial support of Novem in 1998 the information of Phyllis was made available for third parties and the number of data records was increased. Due to the large number of requests received during that year it was decided to get the database accessible through internet. ClassificationThe materials are divided into groups and subgroups according to an ECN classification based on a mixture of plant physiology and practical considerations. The materials have also been classified according to the NTA 8003 classification (version December 2008), the result of the "Classification of Biomass" project initiated by Novem.
