Investigating the impacts of a large-scale rollout of electric vehicles on the grid infrastructure in Europe

Summary

The roll-out of electric vehicles and especially plug-in hybrid vehicles will be reality very soon. Although electricity is available everywhere in Europe, the impact of a large scale introduction needs to be investigated in detail in order to optimise the infrastructure and make use of the inherent opportunities this represents for the operation of smart grids and energy efficiency.

The Grid for vehicles project aims to accomplish the transition from isolated projects in the different member states to a joint European approach on this topic. The project will take all stakeholders into account and focus on generating fast and openly available results: An analytical method to evaluate the impact of a large scale introduction on the grid infrastructure and a visionary “road map” for the year 2020.
