The research question central in this project is: How to assess the gas sector as a complex socio-technical system governed by institutions and regulation, and how to model its operation and evolution to provide underpinning for government policy and company strategy? The focus is on exploring and understanding two types of interactions: (1) intra-market: interaction within the gas sector amongst technology, players, and markets and (2) inter-market: interaction between the gas and electricity sector, via the technical infrastructure, power and carbon markets resulting from (changing) institutions and regulation.
ECN Policy Studies contributes to the overall project by specifically analyzing the interactions between the gas and electricity market. In doing so we deploy a number of our energy market models and combine these to specifically address a number of interacting issues. An example is the impact of intermittency of electricity production and the role for gas-fired electricity generation in providing this.
The partners in this project are Delft University of Technology, University of Groningen, KEMA/Gasunie and GasTerra.
This project is ongoing. The project will be executed between August 2010 and December 2014.
