Markets, infrastructure and energy security - Electricity market

After deregulation of the electricity sector in Europe, EU countries have undergone profound regulatory and operational changes in their electricity markets. The underlying motivation behind these changes is to move from a monopolized vertically-integrated centralized operation of the power sector to a competitive one. Besides competition, EU electricity markets are also connected by a meshed electricity grid network which increases the dependency between them. Furthermore, the development of energy policies in EU countries is moving towards a common energy policy in conjunction with measures to implement energy efficiency, renewable energy, and emissions trading of greenhouse gases. To this aim, the liberalization of electricity markets in EU is underway to move towards an integrated European market for electricity.

The aim for a fully competitive and integrated electricity market has raised several questions regarding the way to achieve this goal and the  impact it will have across the European countries, such as:

  • How will the integrated market affect electricity prices?
  • What flows should we expect in Europe? Where will congestion occur?
  • What are the necessary regulatory changes towards an integrated market?
