This theme focuses on techno-economic research in the area of innovation. It includes the analyses of cost development such as in technological learning. Long-term energy scenarios and models provide insight in the impact of various technological and economic developments and the effect of policy.

ECN Policy Studies conducts techno-economic and socio-technical research on the interaction between R&D, businesses, consumers, and regulation. The unit conducts research in the area of learning phenomena, long term energy scenarios and models. It also provides advice on policy for R&D and deployment for novel technologies. ECN Policy Studies collects and analyses data on the developments in energy technology. This information is gathered in 'Factsheets Energietechnologieën'. For each energy technology information is given in a standardized format on the state-of-the-art of the technology, its contribution to the transition towards a sustainable energy economy and the socio-economic aspects.
