Wouter Wetzels

Wouter Wetzels is a researcher in the field of energy in industry and agriculture. He obtained a PhD in theoretical physics from Delft University of Technology and an MSc degree in physics from Utrecht University. After joining ECN Policy Studies in 2007, he worked on many projects for the Dutch government, such as the Reference Projections 2010-2020 and evaluations of the energy and climate policies of the Dutch government. He has also conducted studies for business clients, such as E.ON, Essent, and the Association of the Dutch Chemical Industry (VNCI). He specialises in  policy evaluations, scenario studies and analyses of energy efficiency, addressing both techno-economical and behavioural aspects.

Main subjects in which he is active include:

  • National and EU policies for industry and agriculture;
  • Potentials for energy savings and emission reduction in the industry;
  • Energy use in greenhouse horticulture and other agricultural sectors;
  • Historical energy efficiency developments in the Dutch industry;
  • Combined heat and power generation.
