Raouf Saidi

Raouf Saidi is an expert in sustainable energy technology in developing countries. He joined ECN in 2008. He studied Sustainable Energy Technology at the Technical University in Delft, after which he was the sole representative of the Free Energy Foundation in Mali, working on rural electrification by stimulating and identifying local entrepreneurs to sell small amorphous solar panels. He was involved in performing market research, training, the organisation of demonstration days and linking partners together to set up projects. He then founded a company that introduced solar applications in Nigeria. At ECN he has tackled a variety of issues, ranging from European Carbon Capture and Storage projects to energy efficiency and access issues in developing countries. Projects include modeling the potential for renewable energy technologies which are eligible projects for the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) in developing countries (commissioned by the  Dutch Ministry of Environment), to investigating the export opportuntity for the Dutch low-carbon industry ( commissioned by the Ministry of Economic affairs). Currently he is actively engaged in the “IS- Academy” (International Cooperation Academy) for renewable energy to research the potential role of aid money to stimulate business models for low-carbon technologies in several east African countries (Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania), and CASINDO (Capacity development and strengthening for energy policy formulation and implementation of sustainable energy projects in Indonesia), where he heads the technical work group for regional energy efficiency planning.
