Michiel Hekkenberg (PhD) is a broadly oriented energy and environmental scientist. His dissertation (2009) studied the interaction between local cooling demand, climate change and international policy strategies. Michiel’s key interest lies in the combined analysis of physical, socio-economic and political structures in order to pinpoint barriers and opportunities to advance the transition to a sustainable energy system. His work at ECN Policy Studies focuses on various aspects of such energy transitions and on integrating climate policy considerations into national policy making processes.
He recently supported the design of a Dutch national roadmap towards a low carbon economy, based on the assessment of interactions and costs of future energy technology portfolios. Also, he developed a survival guide for policy makers that focuses on several non-technical aspects of the energy transition. Further work includes the projection of future energy use and emissions in local and national energy systems and advising on innovation policy. |
