Frans Nieuwenhout was born near Rotterdam in the Netherlands in 1957. He received a BSc degree in Astronomy and an MSc degree in Experimental Physics (Utrecht University, 1985). Since 1990 he has been working in ECN, first on energy policy issues in developing countries, and later on solar energy applications. His current focus is on smart grids and electricity storage.
