COMPETES

COMPETES (COmpetition and Market Power in Electric Transmission and Energy Simulator) is a static short-run equilibrium model of a transmission-constrained power market in Europe.

The model represents the competition between decentralized power producers in the European power market for 20 member states, including a representation of the main transmission network interconnecting these European countries.

The model is used as a quantitative tool to analyze the impact of the developments (generation, demand, transmission) in European electricity markets under different market structures varying from perfect competition to oligopolistic market conditions. For given levels of demand, generation and transmission capacity developments, the model can compute the impact of these developments on:

  • The allocation of generation and transmission capacity in 20 EU countries
  • The associated market prices and consumption for either competitive or strategic behavior (Cournot equilibrium) of generation companies
  • Network flows and potential bottlenecks between countries
  • CO2 emissions
  • Consumer and producer surplus
