COMPETES

COMPETES* (COmpetition and Market Power in Electric Transmission and Energy Simulator) is an equilibrium model of a transmission-constrained power market in Europe. The model represents the competition between decentralized power producers in the European power market (27 member states, Norway, Switzerland, and the Balkan countries) including a representation of the cross-border transmission limitations interconnecting these European countries.

Every country is represented by one node, except for Luxembourg which is aggregated to Germany, and Denmark is split in two nodes due to its participation in two non-synchronous networks. Each node is connected to neighboring nodes by a single interconnection per border, where NTC values represent the transmission capacity on a certain interconnection.

Geographical coverage in COMPETES and the representation of the network according to TYNTP2012 until 2020

There are currently three modules  of the model which can be used as a quantitative tool to address different issues regarding  EU electricity markets:

  • Static model with imperfect competition: represents yearly demand with 12 periods and  is suitable to analyse the impact of possible strategic behaviour by generators on the current or near future electricity markets (e.g., market prices, consumer and producer surplus etc.).
  • Static model with perfect competition: hourly optimal dispatch model including intermittent renewables and suitable to analyse the impact of the developments (generation, demand, transmission) in future European electricity markets on benefits of major players (producer, consumer, and TSO), social welfare and CO2 emissions, potential bottlenecks between countries.
  • Dynamic model with perfect competition: The dynamic COMPETES model computes endogenous investments in conventional generation and/or cross-border transmission capacity, taking into account RES penetration in EU member states, generation intermittency (e.g., wind, solar), and demand variability.
