Transition Technologies - Projects

The core objective of ALTER-MOTIVE is to derive an action plan for implementing effective least-cost policy strategies (for the EU, specific countries & regions) to achieve a significant increase in innovative alternative fuels (AF) and corresponding alternative more efficient automotive technologies (AAMT) to head towards a sustainable individual & public transport system. AF comprise bioethanol, biodiesel, synthetic fuels, biogas, hydrogen, renewable electricity, LPG & natural gas, whilst AAMT include biofuel, fuel cell & electric vehicles and various types of hybrid systems as well as systems based on natural or biogas.

Within the project, a toolbox of the most effective strategies to implement alternative fuels and propulsion systems will be developed. By means of this toolbox, policy makers can more effectively plan selected support measures. The heart of the project is an investigation of about 80 recently implemented successful case studies of pilot projects for marketing alternative fuels and technologies from all over Europe and beyond.

ECN Policy Studies will be responsible for

  • Work Package 5, Evaluation of Policy Effectiveness, which must result in
    • Recommendations on Policy Effectiveness, and a
    • Toolbox for Policy Instruments

The project is financed by the Intelligent Energy Europe Program and has 14 partners from all over Europe. To review the project results and provide feedback from various perspectives, we are looking for national stakeholders from the alternative fuel sector.  A workshop in the Netherlands is scheduled for 2010.
