ECN: Process and System Technology group

ECN

Process and System technology group

Our focus is on scaling-up technology from the lab (proof-of-principle) to a scale which enables the assessment of its economic and technical feasibility. Typically we work on a specific topic with both academic and industrial partners.

Targets for the technology development are set in an early stage of development based on analysis of the industrial application (process design, techno-economic evaluations). In-house engineering and manufacturing of bench- and pilot-scale facilities enables us to test technologies under applications under relevant conditions for their scale-up. Where required our facilities are suited for testing at those conditions, for example at elevated temperatures and pressures. Safety in design and operation of experimental equipment is our key priority.

Competences

Within the Process & System Technology group, we concentrate on a number of competences that support the technology in the priority area Process Intensification and those which are related to the analysis and design of (chemical) processes and energy systems. These activities guide and support the EI research program, but are also performed in contract for third parties. If appropriate, these analyses are carried out in cooperation with universities and industry. We work closely together with the Molecular Separation Technology,  Industrial  Heat Technology and the CO2 Capture groups. Our core competences are:

  • Process & system analysis
Feasibility studies, technology assessments, energy & exergy analysis, process design, modelling, economics and evaluation.
  • System development
Reactor, module and sealing technology, equipment design and building.
  • Implementation facilitation
Client-oriented testing, pre-commercial membrane (reactor) module sales (through http://www.hysep.com/), and test equipment, such as high pressure gas separation installation (Hysum), liquid distributor test installation and the Gas-liquid capillary flow reactor test installation (CRS1).
