The hot producer gas from the MILENA indirect gasifier at pilot-scale (200 mn3/h) is cooled to approximately 400°C in a double pipe gas cooler. The producer gas is cooled with air in co-current in order to avoid wall temperatures below the tar dew point (link to leaflet & leaflet). The cooler design is the result of many fouling tests as described in ECN-C--04-077. One of the important conclusions was that large particles are very efficient in avoiding heat exchanger fouling. Cyclone particle removal therefore is preferably located downstream the producer gas cooler. The cooler has proven to be reliable downstream the 500 kWth CFB gasifier BIVKIN during a 700 hour test early 2006 (E-06-044).
