It's possible: a sustainable European energy system by 2050

A decisive policy based on a realistic long-term view of the future. According to ECN, that is what is needed for a sustainable European energy system by 2050. And ECN has made a contribution to that with its Energy Vision presented on 13 September. “Global warming, dependence on import; the energy system is due for a major overhaul. [more]

The future in biomass

Biomass and waste as fuel, with many of the favourable properties of fossil fuels. This will be possible thanks to ECN’s new BO2-technology. ECN researchers have developed a specific torrefaction technology, which can be used to convert a wide range of biomass/waste streams into pellets. [more]

Cleaner and more efficient freight transport

A literature review by ECN researchers concludes that there are a number of effective options for reducing CO2 emissions and costs for freight transport by trucks and inland shipping. A 20% reduction in CO2 emissions for inland shipping and a 15% reduction for road transport are considered realistic. CO2 emissions in traffic need to be reduced. [more]

Cost effectiveness for offshore wind farms

The maintenance costs for offshore wind farms are substantial. ECN Wind Energy has developed user-friendly software that can be used to determine the cost effectiveness of maintenance and the availability and energy production of an offshore wind farm in every possible scenario. [more]

Job opportunities

ECN, the leading Dutch energy research institute, is at the cutting edge of European efforts in the development of new technologies that meet tomorrow’s energy demand. ECN conducts research and development over a large range of energy technologies, carefully selected by impact over the next decades. [more]

Recent ECN Publications

The research results at the Energy research Centre of the Netherlands are published as reports or as articles in scientific journals like Nature and Science. Presentations, given at international conferences and symposia, are freely available and downloadable from our website. [more]
