Highly localised and extreme climate changes

For some time now ECN has had two climate chambers, a small chamber and a large one. The purchase of a third, new thermal shock chamber makes it possible to carry out extreme climate tests for third parties as well. Bringing an object from -65°C to +200°C in a very short time, now lies within the broad spectrum of research at ECN.

ECN (Energy research Centre of the Netherlands) has extensive research facilities for testing, analysis, design and production. One of these is the climate chamber where tests can be conducted as a function of both temperature and/or humidity. Tests can be either dynamic or static, and the customer can specify whether an object or component is to undergo the test operating or non operating. Various adhesive compounds, reference panels and inverters have already passed the tests in this way.

The small climate chamber, with a capacity of 408 litres, has a temperature range from -40°C to +150°C, and the large one, with a capacity of 1687 litres, from -40°C to +180°C, both at a relative humidity of 20 percent RH to 98 percent RH.

At ECN it even is possible to test a solar cell for use
on Antarctica.

To complement the existing climate chambers a new ‘thermal shock chamber’ is currently being installed. The new chamber has two separately conditioned enclosures, one on top of the other, the upper one with a range from +60°C to +200°C, the lower one for temperatures from -65°C to 0°C. The chamber has a capacity of 100 litres and can take a weight of 30 kilogrammes. An elevator enables a test object in the chamber to be moved from the hot to the cold enclosure and back in a few seconds. The chamber can be used for testing in accordance with various standards, including IEC-60068-2-14 and MIL-202G.

Very fast temperature changes are possible: within
10 seconds from -65° C to +200° C.

The facilities are available for third parties through the ECN Service Desk. ECN offers its expertise and assistance with designing, developing, installing, conducting and monitoring the experiments. Measuring equipment can also be provided for to enable the customer to carry out measurements at their own experimental site.
