Large-scale production announced of high-efficiency solar cells developed by Yingli, Amtech and ECN

Yingli Green Energy Holding, one of the world’s leading vertically integrated photovoltaic product manufacturers, announced a 300MW manufacturing capacity expansion for n-type monocrystalline silicon cells and modules in China. The new production lines will be designed to produce next generation high efficiency n-type silicon solar cells based on the technology developed through Project PANDA. This project, which started in 2009, is a collaboration among ECN, Yingli Green Energy and Amtech Systems. PANDA aims at significantly raising the efficiency of crystalline silicon solar cells and at commercializing the new technology on Yingli’s production lines. The high efficiency cells utilize the cell design (n-type technology) of ECN, the solar diffusion technology and dry PSG removal technology of Tempress Systems, Inc. (Amtech’s solar subsidiary) and Yingli’s Green Energy’s cell process technology. On the PANDA pilot line next-generation cells with an average efficiency of 18% or higher have already successfully been produced. An even higher average efficiency – to at least 18.5% - is expected on the commercial production lines by the end of 2010.
