Honorary doctorate awarded to Jos Beurskens of ECN

Jos Beurskens has received an honorary doctorate for his exceptional contributions to the advancement of wind energy research.

On Monday 16 November 2009, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science of the University of Oldenburg in Germany awarded Jos Beurskens of the Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) the title of Doctor in Natural Science (Honoris Causa). The laudation was pronounced by Prof. dr. Martin Kühn of the University of Stuttgart.

Jos Beurskens has been honoured with this title because of his unremitting efforts to advance wind energy research. Jos was one of the first researchers who put wind energy research on the agenda and he has been putting great effort in this field for nearly forty years. Over the years Jos built up a large international network; among other things he is one of the co-founders of the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) and the European Academy for Wind Energy (EAWE). Moreover, he participates in numerous international fora in the field of wind energy. He is notable for his large involvement in the structuring of wind energy research in Germany. He is chairman of the Scientific Advisory Council of Forwind, a collaboration of the Universities of Oldenburg, Hannover and Bremen in the field of wind energy. During his laudation Jos was commended for his broad perspective on and insight in technological developments in the field of wind energy.

Up to now the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science in Oldenburg has conferred only four honorary doctorates. Previously, three honorary doctorates were awarded to professors, among whom Nobel price winner Klaus von Klitzing (1985).

The board of directors of ECN is very pleased with this appointment. Kees van der Klein, deputy director of ECN: “This is the reward for the wind energy research that Jos has been conducting at ECN for 37 years. It emphasizes the internationally acknowledged position that ECN is holding in the field of wind energy research.”
