Determine the financial benefit of forecasting
The annual production of a wind turbine is at least 1,500 megawatthour per megawatt installed power. (Case: an 80 kilowatt wind turbine with a hub height of 40 meter located onshore.) When wind power is predicted, the imbalance is 500 megawatthour. Without forecasts there would be an extra 150 megawatthour imbalance. If the average price of imbalance is 5 euro per megawatthour, the financial benefit of forecasting is 750 euro per megawatt installed power. For a wind turbine with an annual production of 2,400 megawatthour per megawatt (like a 2 megawatt wind turbine with a hub height of 70 meter) the benefit reaches 1,200 euro per megawatt.
